at our san francisco station kpix, good evening, paul. >> good evening to you, rebecca. >> this system is being described as a fire hose pointed straight at the west coast. what can you tell us about it? well, if mother nature did have a fire hose this certainly would be it. this is tropical moisture that begins west of hawaii, some 3,000, 4,000 miles away from the west coast but it makes this journey all the way from there all the way to the west coast. this tropical moisture can even be an old hurricane from 10 days ago somewhere out in the eastern pacific ocean. it slams into the west coast and everybody gets a ton of rainfall. and in this case, just tonight and tomorrow we're looking at widespread rainfall totals of two inches or more from seattle in western washington all the way down to san francisco, the bay area, even southern california will get heavy rain from the system. >> i understand there's also snow to expect. >> there's a lot of snow to expect. not in california, because pineapple express is this tropical moisture can sometimes move up the coast and give us a high snow

what will move through the country weatherwise. there is a storm developing. if you're in san francisco, it has been a deluge of rain. as we toward tomorrow, watch san francisco once again get hit with rain. you can see that move through. it does move out by monday. monday, the west coast is dry. here's what we're really watching. this will be our christmas week storm more or less. area of low pressure will develop here in the gulf of mexico. we'll bring in moisture from the gulf. there develops that low. this is christmas. it may not be white, but it will be wet. perhaps in little rock and new orleans and birmingham and atlanta, down here into the deep south. if we can get enough cold air down here, we may mix in a few snow flurries. we're keeping an eye on how deep that cold air gets. it looks like that low will develop. and across the country here into the midatlantic and bring some snowwednesday, thursday timeframe into the northeast again. we'll have to keep an eye on that. the focus for today, the northeast, of course, some snow showers even around new york city perhaps today. but
